Tool item ID

Enhancing tool identification and traceability

The Ifind app supports reading data matrix codes. Read More

Want to make your tool management easier and more efficient?

We do. Our Tool item ID program is designed to ensure that all our products are marked with a unique data matrix code, significantly improving tool identification and traceability.

Currently, all our standard solid carbide drills are marked, and we are rapidly expanding this initiative to include a larger portion of our product range. This expansion underscores our commitment to providing you with advanced identification solutions, with the best product traceability and identification technology.

Key benefits

Easy access to product information

By scanning the data matrix code using the Ifind app, or your tool management solution with a USB scanner you get instant access to product details, cutting data, tool assembly management, spare parts and replacements.

Minimize errors and save costs

It can be difficult to keep track of the details for each one of your tools. Automated tool identification via a scanner reduces errors and ensures you use the correct tool, cutting speeds and feeds, for more secure machining – at end leading to cost savings.

Empower your tool management

Adhering to GS1 standards, we help you enhance your own solutions. Integrations with existing systems simplify tool identification and traceability.

Supporting circular business models

Tool Item ID offers a platform for item traceability data to be collected, enabling increased production efficiency and responsible material usage. Industry standardization, especially with GS1 identification technology, is essential for driving sustainable business across the industry.

Data matrix code

Tool Item ID is an individual tool's unique identity, carried by a data matrix marked directly on the tools.

  1. Data matrix codes can be rectangular or square. The number of characters a code can store (its capacity) depends on the number of modules
  2. An "L"-shaped border, known as the finder pattern, identifies a data matrix code
  3. An unmarked “Quiet Zone” should surround the code. It should be >1 module width
  4. A module, or cell, refers to one individual dark or light square

* To support universal recognition of the code it is conforming to GS1 SGTIN standards and VDMA34193_2021

Frequently asked questions

What is a data matrix code?
keyboard_arrow_down

A data matrix code is a 2D bar code. All types of bar codes contain strings of numbers and letters that are easier to read by machines and can take up less space than printed text. The GS1 SGTIN standard we follow means the code contains a standardised string that holds a registered company identifier, a product identifier, and a serial number.

Is a data matrix the same as a QR code?
keyboard_arrow_down

No, but they have very similar functions. QR codes are more commonly used by smart phones and therefore are recognized by most native camera apps. Data matrix codes normally need a specific scanning app to read them.

Will all Sandvik Coromant products have a data matrix?
keyboard_arrow_down

Sandvik Coromant has an ambition to mark the majority of our products. The solid carbide offer is first out, followed by tools, tool holders and inserts. Over the coming years we will see the roll out gradually across our range, and hope to see our industry as a whole do the same. The small parts of our product range that do not have codes will typically be due to technical and size limitations for the marking. However, these products will still be easily identified by bar codes on the box they come in.
